Freshy Week 2026: seven days of saving food
Freshy Week ran from 29 September to 6 October 2026. Seven food-saving days with a small task each day — followed by a review on 6 October showing what your household saved from the bin.
Why a whole week?
Throwing food away is rarely a deliberate decision. It happens in passing: a pack slips to the back, you notice the date too late, and by the end of the week the fridge is full but your mind is blank. One good intention therefore does little; a week with one specific step each day can help.
Germany produces around 10.8 million tonnes of food waste each year; roughly half comes from private households (BMLEH, 2022 data). It is about knowing what you have, rather than good intentions.

Seven food-saving days and the review
- 29 September – Stock check: Record five foods to use next.
- 30 September – Watch the date: Make a firm plan to use an item that is due soon in a meal.
- 1 October – Fridge zones: Move opened food to the front and set a reminder.
- 2 October – Check the shopping list: Before shopping, see what is actually missing.
- 3 October – Leftovers recipe: Make a meal from three ingredients you already have.
- 4 October – Freezer find: Save something forgotten in the freezer.
- 5 October – Plan together: Coordinate your stock with your household.
- 6 October – Review: Count what you saved.
Each task takes a few minutes. It is not about perfection, but about looking at what usually goes unnoticed.

Part of Germany’s nationwide campaign week
Freshy Week ran alongside the “Zu gut für die Tonne!” (“Too good for the bin!”) campaign week organised by Germany’s Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Regional Identity. Its 2026 motto was “Alles auf dem Zettel!” (“Put it all on the list!”) — focusing on exactly what matters here: thoughtful planning, from shopping lists and fridge checks to cooking with leftovers.
Freshy Week is listed in the official events calendar. You can also find the other participation events held throughout Germany there.
