Frequently asked questions
Stock, expiry dates, shopping and recipes — supported by Freshy AI and always under your control.
General
What exactly does BiteFresh do?
BiteFresh connects your stock, expiry dates, shopping and meal planning. You capture food by receipt, barcode, photo, voice or text, get timely reminders, and can use matching recipes and a weekly plan.
Do I need an account?
Yes. You create a free account. This ensures that data, roles, households and device sync are assigned uniquely and securely.
What does BiteFresh cost?
Included for free is stock management with up to 35 stock items, without AI features. Premium comes in three plans: 2 persons €3.99 per month or €39.99 per year, 4 persons €5.99 or €59.99, 6 persons (multi-family) €8.99 or €89.99. These are the prices in Germany as shown in the App Store and on Google Play, including VAT; prices in other countries are set by the stores. Eligible store accounts can try Premium once for 14 days; the trial then converts into the chosen subscription unless you cancel it in the store beforehand. The AI features (Freshy messages, vision scans, AI recipes and the AI weekly plan) are part of Premium or of the trial.
Which devices and languages are supported?
BiteFresh is available for iPhone (iOS 15.1 or later) on the App Store and for Android on Google Play, in German, English, French, Italian and Spanish. There is also an Alexa skill, currently in German only.
Does BiteFresh work offline?
You can use your stock and shopping list without a connection. Sign-in, household sync, AI, vision scans and external integrations require an internet connection.
Scanning, stock & expiry dates
How do I capture my food?
You can scan a receipt, a barcode or a single product. Alternatively you add food by voice, text or form. AI results stay reviewable and can be corrected.
How does the app know how long something lasts?
BiteFresh uses product data, typical shelf-life values and — where enough reliable data is available — your own past consumption patterns. The figure is guidance. What matters in the end is the packaging, the best-before date, the smell and the appearance.
Can I track quantities, units and opened packs?
Yes. BiteFresh keeps quantities and units and can treat opened products separately. When cooking and in multi-day plans, stock is taken into account by quantity and unit.
Why do I see an icon instead of a product photo?
If no semantically matching real image is available, BiteFresh deliberately shows a neutral icon. That way no misleading product image is implied. You can use your own product images for individual entries.
Freshy AI & voice
What can Freshy do?
Freshy answers questions about your active household and carries out supported actions by text or voice — for example adding, opening or consuming products, or putting them on the shopping list. Several steps in one request are possible.
Can Freshy make mistakes?
Yes. Like any AI, Freshy can misunderstand input or make unsuitable suggestions. That is why results stay visible and correctable, and the app asks for confirmation before important or destructive actions.
Do I have to play with Freshy?
No. Levels, progression and small hints are optional. Stock, shopping list and expiry reminders work without any gamification.
Alexa
Does BiteFresh work with Alexa?
Yes. Since 25 September 2026 there is an Alexa skill “BiteFresh” with the invocation “Alexa, öffne Kühlschrank Fresh”; first open the skill, then say what you need. It is currently available in German only. You can ask what expires soon, add products to the shopping list or report used-up items; Alexa asks for confirmation before booking anything as used. You find the skill in the Amazon Skill Store.
How do I link Alexa to my BiteFresh account?
Enable the skill in the Alexa app and sign in once with your BiteFresh account (account linking). This also works if you created your account with Google or Apple. Alexa then works on the same household as the app; you can unlink it in the Alexa app at any time.
Why does Alexa not suggest recipes?
Recipe suggestions via Alexa use AI. They require that you have given consent to the AI features in the BiteFresh app (the AI checkbox) and that a paid Premium plan is active; the free trial is not enough. Otherwise Alexa replies that the feature is not yet enabled for your account. Expiry dates, stock and the shopping list work without AI.
Which phrases does the Alexa skill understand?
First open the German skill: “Alexa, öffne Kühlschrank Fresh”. Then make your request in German, for example “Was läuft bald ab?” (what expires soon?), “Setz Butter auf die Einkaufsliste” (add butter to the shopping list), or “Die Milch ist alle” (the milk has run out). You can also ask whether you still have an item or have your shopping list read aloud.
Households & care
What is a cared-for household?
On the six-person/multi-family plan, an authorised user can look after up to three additional households alongside their own — for example for parents or grandparents. The active household and your own role are clearly shown before any action.
What can a carer see and edit?
An authorised carer can see and edit stock and recipes as well as all private and shared shopping lists whose owner is a member of the cared-for household. The carer role is verified not only in the interface but also on the server.
Can data from different households get mixed up?
Household data is kept separate. The interface and Freshy use the same active household context; without matching membership or carer authorisation the server refuses access.
Recipes, weekly plan & Autopilot
Where do recipe suggestions come from?
BiteFresh prioritises matching base recipes, favourites and imported recipes. Only when those sources do not fit can AI add to them. Suggestions take into account what you have and what is due soon.
What does Autopilot do?
Autopilot can take learned coverage, minimum stock levels and automatic consumption into account. Rules can be paused globally and controlled per product.
Does Autopilot order automatically?
No. Autopilot only adds to your shopping list. Buying, ordering and handing over to an external service remain deliberate user actions.
Shopping & integrations
Can I share and sort shopping lists?
Yes. Household lists can be edited together and sorted by store or by personal shopping sections. In the care model, an authorised carer can additionally manage all private and shared shopping lists whose owner is a member of the cared-for household.
Which integrations are available?
BiteFresh supports Bring! import as well as a Picnic handover. Availability and exact scope depend on country, region, the external service and possibly your plan. Naming these services describes technical handovers, not a partnership.
Premium & subscription
What is included in BiteFresh Premium?
Premium extends, among other things, stock, scan and Freshy allowances, and additional features such as Autopilot, shared lists or cared-for households — depending on the plan you choose. The feature overview shown in the app before purchase is always authoritative.
How do I manage or cancel my subscription?
A subscription taken out through Apple or Google is managed and cancelled in the subscription settings of the respective store. Details are in our Terms of Use.
Data & security
What happens to my data?
BiteFresh is designed for data minimisation. Data is transmitted over encrypted connections; our own API runs on servers in Germany. Personal data is not sold. Details are in the Privacy Policy.
Are my receipt photos stored?
Receipt and product images are processed for recognition. Which providers are involved and which retention periods apply is explained in the Privacy Policy.
Can I delete my account and my data?
Yes. The app offers account deletion; you will also find instructions on the Delete account page.
