How do I scan a receipt?

Start with a readable photo of the entire paper receipt, or import the complete original e-receipt PDF. Then check items, quantities, prices, date and receipt currency before adding them.

AIBarcode scanning and manual entry remain free.

Step by step

  1. Tap Scan at the bottom. Choose Scan receipt for a paper receipt, or Import e-receipt for a digital receipt from your retailer's app.

  2. Paper receipt: choose Whole receipt and photograph it from the shop name to the total. Lay it flat, hold the camera steady and use even light. Move close enough for the text to stay readable. Check the photo before analysing it.

  3. If the text is too small in a whole-receipt photo, choose Close-up sections. To change capture mode, first remove existing photos with ×. Photograph one receipt in 2–3 close sections from top to bottom. A few lines may overlap; include the shop, date and total. Capture all sections first, then analyse them together. The free trial allows up to 3 section photos per receipt.

  4. Digital receipt: choose the complete original PDF with all pages from your files. A screenshot of a single page may cut off items. You can also import an image of the entire receipt.

  5. For receipt photos, tap Analyse. Long receipts may take a little longer for Freshy to read. If you see an error, read the help shown: a connection issue or delayed response says nothing about your PDF's quality.

  6. Compare Recognised products with the original receipt. You can correct names, prices and quantities. Also check Purchase date and the displayed receipt currency. A different or unknown receipt currency is kept separate from your household budget; the app does not convert the amount.

  7. Compare Line total with Receipt total. Deposit is not a separate stock item. If the totals still differ after accounting for deposit, the app shows a difference warning. Check missing items, quantities and discounts against the original receipt.

  8. Check the proposed storage: frozen goods may be marked ❄️ Freezer, cans 🥫 Can → pantry and jars 🫙 Jar → pantry. If the assignment is wrong, tap Undo beside it. Compare the suggested shelf life with the packaging.

  9. If an item is unclear, Help Freshy lets you confirm a suggestion, enter a name yourself or skip the question. Then check the result again in the item list.

  10. If the products are already in your stock through the shopping list, enable Only for the budget book. This records the expense only.

  11. Finally, tap the button to add the products. Check the saved items in your stock afterwards.

Good to know

A PDF problem does not mean you need to photograph the receipt again. If Try with the same file is offered, the complete file and operation ID stay the same; an already completed result is retrieved again. If the operation is still open or the response remains unusable, use the support reference shown. An open operation is not yet a saved purchase.

An incomplete response does not add partial items. Your receipt photos remain available for review. That alone does not indicate a blurred photo; follow the specific message in the app.

Quantity lines, pack details and discounts can be arranged differently on receipts. Compare the item count or weight and the full line price with the original. AI recognition can make mistakes.
